Custom Radon Mitigation & Sump Pump Installation

This homeowner wanted both a new sump pump and a radon mitigation system installed. In many homes, we tie the radon system directly into the sump pit because it typically provides excellent pressure field communication and is one of the most effective collection points.

In this home, however, we determined that using the sump pit was not the best solution. The sump pit was located in a completely finished interior room, and there were no unfinished exterior utility areas or open floor joists that would allow us to route a 3-inch PVC vent pipe without opening walls and ceilings. Rather than create unnecessary drywall repairs and additional expense for the homeowner, we designed a different approach.

After evaluating several options, we selected a window well that provided the best combination of accessibility and system performance. We carefully excavated approximately 3½ feet to reach the home’s perimeter French drain. Once the drain pipe was exposed, we inserted a 3-inch suction pipe directly into the drainage system, creating an effective sub-slab suction point while minimizing disruption to the finished basement.

From there, we installed the radon mitigation system in accordance with NRPP and ANSI/AARST standards, routing the vent piping to provide optimal performance while maintaining a clean appearance. We also installed the new sump pump and discharge piping to ensure reliable groundwater management.

The final step was installing and sealing the airtight sump lid, completing a professional installation that addresses both water intrusion and elevated radon levels while preserving the finished interior of the home.

This project is a great example of why every radon mitigation system should be custom-designed. Rather than using the same approach on every home, we evaluate the construction, accessibility, and performance requirements to provide the most effective solution with the least disruption to the homeowner.
