Eliminating Noise and Upgrading an Older Mitigation System

Homeowners in beautiful Star Valley recently contacted North Point Radon after becoming concerned about excessive noise coming from their Radon mitigation system. The existing system utilized a RadonAway RP145 radon fan that had been operating since 2009. While the fan was still functional, its location and installation methods caused noticeable vibration and noise that could be heard from the homeowners’ bedroom.

Upon inspection, North Point Radon discovered several issues commonly found in older Wyoming radon mitigation systems. The RP145 fan had been connected directly to Schedule 20 PVC piping using duct tape instead of proper vibration-isolating rubber couplings. This allowed fan vibration to transfer throughout the piping system and into the structure of the home, amplifying sound levels in living spaces.

Additional concerns were identified during the evaluation. The radon fan was hardwired without a dedicated electrical disconnect or service outlet in the attic. This made future servicing more difficult and did not meet current Radon mitigation standards for accessibility and maintenance.

To improve system performance and homeowner comfort, North Point Radon removed the aging RP145 and installed a new GX4 radon fan. The larger GX4 fan was selected to provide reliable long-term performance while maintaining effective sub-slab depressurization. To address the noise concerns, rubber flex couplings were installed above and below the fan, isolating vibration from the PVC piping system and significantly reducing sound transmission.

As part of the upgrade, North Point Radon also installed a dedicated electrical outlet in the attic, eliminating the hardwired connection and providing a safer, more serviceable installation for future maintenance.

Following completion of the project, the homeowners immediately noticed a dramatic improvement. The vibration and fan noise that had previously been audible in the bedroom were greatly reduced, resulting in a much quieter indoor environment. The homeowners expressed their satisfaction with both the improved sound levels and the overall quality of the installation.
