Job Stories From Fraser, CO
Radon Mitigation in Fraser, Colorado: Using a Builder Installed Radon Riser

North Point Radon recently completed a radon mitigation system installation in Fraser, Colorado, where the home presented an important challenge: in-floor radiant heat throughout the concrete slab.

Because drilling through a slab containing radiant heat tubing can create unnecessary risk, we first evaluated the builder-installed radon riser that had been placed during construction. The riser provided an existing pathway to the soil beneath the home and gave us the opportunity to install an active sub-slab depressurization (SSD) radon mitigation system without drilling additional suction points through the radiant heated slab.

Evaluating the Existing Radon Riser

During the installation, we found construction debris inside the radon riser. Our technicians were able to remove a portion of the debris and improve the pathway beneath the slab. The existing riser was then incorporated into the home's active radon reduction system.

Because the effectiveness of a radon system ultimately depends on creating adequate negative pressure beneath the slab, post-mitigation radon testing and system performance will determine whether additional work is needed at the existing suction point. If necessary, the suction point beneath the slab can be further evaluated and improved to achieve better sub-slab communication.

Routing the Radon System Through the Garage

The location of the builder-installed riser also played an important role in the system design. After evaluating both an exterior radon system and an interior routing option, we determined that routing the radon vent pipe through the garage provided the best installation for this home.

Using the garage allowed us to take advantage of the existing radon rough-in while avoiding an unnecessarily prominent exterior piping system. The result is a cleaner installation while still providing the active airflow necessary for sub-slab radon mitigation.
